What to watch for in the next round of Chinese basketball at the ICC in India
A day after Beijing handed India the first loss of the ICC’s Asian tour, the Chinese national team will face a daunting test in Mumbai.
The Chinese are still yet to face the likes of Pakistan or India, but their chances of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup are growing, with the ICC listing a potential qualification for Asia as the first objective of the next ICC tournament.
China, who have never reached a finals in a tournament, will be hoping to extend their record against India, who has won the past two titles.
The hosts will be aiming to get the win in their final international clash, which takes place on Sunday at the venue that hosts the ICC tournament in India.
After their previous triumph at the Asia Cup in 2015, China will have to beat Pakistan in their next game against a side that has already dropped points at the I-League.
India won their first game in the Asia Series in the quarter-finals against Afghanistan but then fell 2-1 to Zimbabwe.
After the game, the Indian players and coaches were told that India are favourites to reach the finals.
In the past, the only time a China team was drawn against India was in the Asian Cup in 2002, when they lost 2-0 to Bangladesh.
The Indian players had said that they were going to win the Asia series against China, and it is unlikely that they will forget their previous defeat.
“It’s the only way we can win.
It’s not possible for us to lose to the best team in the world,” said Indian captain Dinesh Karthik.
“We’re still in a good position to win it, but it’s very tough to play against a team that has lost the past three games.
India have got to win one or two of their last three games.”
Chinese coach Xu Xinqiang has said that he expects India to struggle in Mumbai, where they are expected to be under pressure.
India has beaten India in the past and the match in Mumbai will be a huge test for the Chinese players, who will be under heavy pressure from the Indian coach.
“We have a lot of work to do.
It will be difficult to beat them in Mumbai,” said Xu Xinquiang.
